Carburetor Tear Down
My car wasn't running very well. The car sat over the winter and I didn't fill up the tank. It was a very humid winter and even a more humid spring and summer. This allowed condensation to collect and left water in my lines and carburetor. Now at the time I knew nothing about carbs. I have a Edlebrock 1405 carb. Once I got some great information from a forum friend I was able to take it completely apart and put it all back together after a very good cleaning. Then I tuned it up and the car has ran great ever since. I've even picked up a jet kit for the carb and at some point I might play with some of that to see what kinds of changes I can make. Anyway from the picture you can see all that crud and crap in the carb. My forum friend '23Alt' hooked me up with a picture and some instructions on how to go about tearing down the carb and cleaning it all out.
So these are the steps that I took to clean up the carb.
Remove the covers (#35) and pull the pistons, rods and springs. (#36 through 39).
Reinstall these after the top's back on.
Get the top off, pull the jets out of the bottom of the bowls and take the idle mixture screws out.
(note jets are different front to back)
Look under the accelerator pump plunger and make sure part #26 isn't stuck. Be careful here and
you'll be able to save the little gasket, remove the discharge nozzles, (part #11) and make sure the
ball and weight (8 & 9) under it aren't stuck. With 8, 9, and 26 out, squirt some carb cleaner through
the fuel passage. Blow it out with air and make sure it's clear.
Pull the primary boosters (18 and 19). Again, be patient and you'll save the gaskets under 'em.
Make sure ALL the little holes in the brass tubes are clear. Blow through the holes in the body
where they mount. You can do the secondaries (#5) too if you want, probably not a bad idea
while we're here.
Blow through the jet holes, then the mixture screw holes, give all the holes a shot of carb cleaner,
blow it out again, go back and forth a few times.
Then button 'er all back together, adjust 'er up and see how that does.
It was that easy. I went through the steps and tossed it back on the car and followed the tuning steps that can be found on the edlebrock web site and I have been good ever since. My carb is below. Cost = Nothing!
